#Providenciales, February 22, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – As an Associate Member of CARICOM, the PDM Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands says it will report the expensive burden of Haiti on the TCI at the next CARICOM meeting.
“Their continued illegal descending continues to
cost us and we will raise this matter at the CARICOM level together with The
Bahamas.”
During her media meeting on Tuesday, Premier and
Finance Minister, Sharlene Robinson called the volatile situation in Haiti
“unfortunate” and explained that while The Bahamas has chosen to suspend
deportation of Haitians back to Haiti, the TCI will not do the same.
“Turks and Caicos Government will not take that
position at this time, we will continue to intercept and
repatriate. In a few weeks, the Deputy Premier will share ongoing
measures and new initiatives to be undertaken. We cannot afford to
be our regional brothers’ keeper at this time.”
The Turks and Caicos remains on high alert as protests in Haiti, demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise, continue.
