TCI: Minister of Sports attendance at the American Council of Sports (CADE) – Uruguay 2019
#Providenciales, February 28, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The Turks and Caicos Islands delegation led by the Honourable Edwin Astwood, Minister of Health, Agriculture, Sports and Human Services attended the 19th CADE Ordinary Assembly which took place in the city of Punta del Este, Uruguay from the 18 to 22nd February, 2019.
At the invitation of the National Secretary of Sports Uruguay, this was the first time representatives from the Ministry of Sports, TCI have attended and participated at such an assembly.
The musical fusion of the Uruguayan culture Candombe dance welcomed all delegates and participants at a reception dinner.
During the three-day sport summit (the 19th General Assembly of CADE), Hon. Astwood met with a number of Sports Ministers, Presidents and Sport Authorities representing from various Caribbean countries including Barbados, Dominican Republic, Puerto-Rico and Latin American Sports Council / Agencies. Approximately 100 International participants and guest were in attendance with a total of 25 countries represented of which 6 were distinguished international boarders.
The 19th Annual General Sports conference commenced with a report by the American Sports Council President who stated that “Sports is an activity that contributes to the most active curriculum in our lives.” In his report he noted that a web site has been developed by CADE organization CADEPORTES.ORG to link countries and share vital information that encourages growth and development of sports in the Americas.
Director of Sport who was also in attendance, focused on gathering key information essential to sport development in the TCI as well as making strong links with sport personnel in member countries who can prove to be great partners for the TCI. Mr. Forbes stated “that the sports summit was very informative and the information gathered will indeed be implemented in the TCI.”
Amongst the topics discussed were:
1. School Extra Curricular Activities, following the Kazan Action Plan
2. Olympic Movement and Governments
3. University Sports in the Americas
4. Sports Infrastructure Improvements at a Low Cost
5. World Anti-Doping Agency
Hon. Astwood stated; “This CADE assembly was packed full of information for the further development of Sports in the Caribbean and the Americas. Emphasis was placed on the Continuity, Efficiency, and Sustainability of Sports, and the need for sports to work for, and benefit the entire population”.
At the closing of the general assembly, the Bi-Laws of the American Sports Council which were drafted at the 18th Assembly was formally approved by the delegates present. The new CADE election for the President and Vice Presidency for the period 2019-2021 was held. Hon. Astwood participated during the sessions and was also a signature on numerous declarations. Such Declarations will be released to the public shortly. The next host country for the 20th General Sports Assembly is Ecuador.
The Minister responsible for Sports was accompanied by his Director of Sports, Mr. Jarrett Forbes and the Executive Administrator, Mrs. Darlene Clerveaux-Forbes, for the Ministry of Health, Agriculture Sports and Human Services.
