#Providenciales, February 6, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – February 3, 2019 The Environmental Health Department (EHD) is an arm of the Ministry of Health, Agriculture, Sports and Human Services that is concerned with all aspects of the natural and built environment that may affect human health.

One of the functions of EHD is solid waste management which includes the solid waste disposal sites throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.

On Saturday February 2, 2019 around 9:00 p.m., the EHD Director was informed by the dump site Security Company and members of the public of a fire at the Providenciales dump site. The security Guards on duty contacted 911 and the Fire Department for assistance to conduct the following:

  • Extinguish the fire
  • Provide EHD with an investigation report.

On Saturday afternoon February 2, 2019 at 5:00 p.m., the site was prepared to be covered the following morning and there was no presence of fire at the site, neither were there any signs of fire at the site following the Security’s hourly checks.

Based on the report from Fire Services and Security, the fire was lit at various locations which indicated that it was intentionally lit by someone or persons who may have gained access through the breaches in the fence.

EHD wishes to advise the residents of Providenciales especially those living in Wheeland and the Chalk Sound area, that the department is addressing the current fire at the disposal site.

The Tender Notice for the Management and Operations of the Providenciales and Grand Turk Landfills is currently out and the Department should have a contract signed and implemented by April 1, 2019.

We wish to assure the public that we are committed to safeguarding public health while also creating an environment that is healthy and aesthetically pleasing to both residents and visitors to enjoy.
