TCI: Efforts continue at the Provo dump site; residents contend with another smoke filled night

#Providenciales, February 5, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The Provo dump fire is for the most part, extinguished after an overnight dousing by the airport fire department… but there is still smoke and lots of it.

Minister of Home Affairs, Delroy Williams explained that right now excavators are on site trying to smother the smelly smoke with rock curry.  Williams, also the area MP said there is a lot of work going on and a lot of curry available for use.  Still, Minister Williams expressed that it is going to be another smoky night for residents.

The cause of the fire is believed to be a strike back by illegal squatters.  Illegal occupation of the land activated the multi-agency Task Force including Police, Environmental Health, DECR and the Immigration Dept.

The Force, bearing guns and big manpower entered the bushes flanking the dump and put out a few coal kilns.  The sites were destroyed.

The fire, which is believed to have been intentionally set, may be in retaliation to the operation.  Minister Williams promised that the fire being set at the landfill or dump will not hamper law enforcement efforts.

Today, TCIPS had to cancel school.  Students were being sickened by the smoke and were allowed to return home.

Residents report coughing all night, a grave concern especially for parents of asthmatic children.  Others left for work this morning with a smoky fragrance filling their clothes and yet more are calling on country leaders to act and fix the raging issues at the dump.

Tonight, there is anger… and for many people, an audible, frustrating silence from the Government which has not spoken officially about the fire, since it started on Sunday.
