Turks and Caicos to bid farewell to EU body next week

#Providenciales, February 24, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – French Polynesia is where the premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands is headed.  Premiere Sharlene Robinson on Tuesday explained that the European Union Overseas Countries & Territories Forum will be the last for the TCI, due to the imminence of Brexit.

“Marking that the Brexit actually takes effect, that is the UK leaving the EU on March 31, 2019, this will be the final forum for British Overseas Territories as we too will be exiting the Overseas Countries and Territories Association, styled OCTA where we have served as members and on two occasions and chairman since 2003,” said the Premier at a press conference.

Nine overseas territories countries, in all, will exit the European Union with Mother England next month.

From OCTA’s website, it is explained of the forum: “The OCTA Ministerial Conference and the 17th OCT-EU Forum will be held in Tahiti, French Polynesia, from 25th February to 1st March 2019. While the Ministerial Conference will be chaired by French Polynesia, the OCT-EU Forum will be chaired by the European Commission. The 17th Forum will be the second OCT-EU Forum organised in French Polynesia, Indeed, the 3rd OCT-EU Forum took place in Tahiti in March 2005.

The Forum is one of the three instances of dialogue for the Association between EU and OCTs: “An OCT-EU forum for dialogue (the ‘OCT-EU Forum’), shall meet annually to bring together OCTs authorities, representatives of the Member States and the Commission. Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the EIB, and representatives of the outermost regions shall, where appropriate, be associated with the OCT-EU Forum.”
