#Providenciales, February 28, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Legal issues which need desperate resolve and which can be impossible to pay for, for some in our society will get an audience during a Free Legal Advice Clinic this coming Saturday March 2, 2019 at the Community Fellowship Center, across from Nell’s on Leeward Highway.
“We
have over a dozen highly experienced and more senior members of the Bar who
will be ready and willing to give legal advice in their areas of expertise;
representing an unquantified number of billable hours given freely with a mind
of service to the public,” said new President of the TCI Bar Council, Oreika
Selver.
Ms.
Selver, who is also Legal & Compliance Officer at Invest Turks and Caicos
Agency explained to Magnetic Media that, “The TCI Bar Association will host its
first Legal Advice Clinic as way to give back to the TCI Community – We wanted
to do so in a way that allows us to utilize our skills as practitioners and
have a direct and positive impact on those seeking legal advice.”
Those
who turn out to the half day event will be able to sit with an attorney and
explain their legal woes with a sense of ‘hope’ about how to get help.
“Our
goal is that participants, who have had little or no prior legal advice, will
leave each interview having a better understanding what their issues are, and
how best to resolve them. Some matters will be a bit more complex and
cannot be resolved in the time allotted, and in those cases – our aim is to at
the very least, be able to give some guidance on the next steps”
No
doubt this is welcomed news for members of the public and Ms. Selver said there
are many thank-you’s to go around.
“We
wish to thank Pastor Bradley Handfield, of Community Fellowship Centre, and the
Community Vocational Institute for offering its facilities to the Bar Council
free of charge. We are beyond grateful for their willingness to assist in
this endeavour.”
The
Free Clinic is this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and anyone in need of legal
expertise should try to make the complimentary consultations. Ms. Selver
promises that if there is a demand, there could be more free Legal Advice
Clinics on more islands.
“The TCI Bar Council and its Association Members will gauge the public’s response to the service and determine if there’s a need for the advice clinic and whether or not to make it a bi-annual event; if successful, we would ultimately wish to venture out into the Family Islands.”
