#Providenciales, January 16, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence within the Ministry of Health, Agriculture, Sports and Human Services is pleased to announce the launch of its Driving under the Influence (DUI) program.

Every year there are a number of fatal vehicular accidents that occur as a direct result of alcohol or drug use. However, these deaths can be prevented. With the increased enforcement of the DUI laws by law enforcement officials it is believed that this program will provide an additional layer of assistance by targeting and educating impaired driving offenders.

The program spans across eight weeks and is being launched first in Providenciales and will then be replicated in the other islands. The program is delivered primarily in group format and is both educational and process oriented. Some of the topics addressed include: Effects of alcohol and drugs, Impairment of driving abilities, skills and judgment, Effects on the body and health and Effects of DUI on the individual, family and society.

Participants can be expected to be actively involved in group discussions and activities that involve creating a change plan, exploring thoughts and feelings as well as learning how to maintain change.

Persons may be referred by the Police Department, the Courts, Hospital or even self-referred.

If you or someone you know received a DUI charge or needs assistance with drug or alcohol use, contact the Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence on 649-338-3613 in Grand Turk or 649-338-4737 in Providenciales or by visiting our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TCIDMHSD
