Department of Culture – Back To Our Roots Boat Building Workshop

North Caicos, January 22, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – As a part of its Back to our Roots program, the Department of Culture continue their boat building sessions with students from North Caicos yesterday, 17 January 2019.

Yesterday’s session saw a total of 17 students participating from both the Primary and Secondary schools, under the leadership of Pastor Goldstone Williams and Miss Alishia Duncanson, Senior Cultural Officer.

Remarks were brought by Mrs. Janet Walkin, Principal of the Raymond Gardiner High School who also introduced Pastor Gold to the students.  She gave them a bit of history on him indicating that he is a man of the soil, a former student of the RGHS, a Pastor and one of the best carpenters right from Bottle Creek, North Caicos.  She further encouraged the students to take full advantage of the opportunity provided to them by the Department of Culture through this program.  She expressed her excitement and profound gratitude for the initiative.

Before beginning the technical part of the session, Pastor Gold enlightened the students as to how he got into boat building and stressed the importance of being committed to the task.

The session ended with 5 boats being shaped.  The follow up sessions will continue on the 24 and 31 January and will be ready to sail in the upcoming Valentine’s Day Cup competition which will be held in Middle Caicos on February 16, 2019.

While there, Miss Duncanson made a presentation to the Hubert James Primary School of Cultural Posters which also forms a part of the Back to our Roots program.
