#Providenciales, December 1, 2018 – Turks and Caicos – “Volunteers Build Resilient Communities” – “The hands that make a difference are the hands of a Volunteer”.

December 5th is recognized as International Volunteers Day (IVD) on an annual basis, as mandated by the United Nations General Assembly (UN).  International Volunteer’s Day was established in 1985 as an observance day to celebrate the power and potential of Volunteerism.

According to the UN, this year’s theme, “Volunteers build Resilient Communities,” focuses on how volunteers worldwide contribute to making their communities more resilient against hazards (natural and man-made) that can result in disasters, economic stresses and political shocks.

This year as we celebrate, the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) recognizes the relentless efforts of Volunteers, who answer the call in times of need for the common dignity of all.  The Department says a warm Thank You to the Volunteers, throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands, who continue to support and provide assistance when required.  Your dedication and commitment to the Department and service to Country has not gone unnoticed. We also take this opportunity to encourage all interested persons to volunteer today and become a part of the DDME Volunteer Team.

Finally, in recognition of IVD 2018, the General Public is advised that our CERT and CURE Volunteers, in partnership with the TCI Red Cross and ADRA, will be distributing of Disaster Awareness pamphlets in the various communities across the Turks and Caicos Islands on Wednesday, December 5th, 2018.

For more information on how to become a volunteer and application forms, please visit the DDME Offices in Providenciales or Grand Turk, your local District Commissioner’s Office, or our website at www.gov.tc/ddme/forms
