A big Caribbean earthquake possible, UWI research center records 54 earthquakes last weekend

#Providenciales, December 14, 2018 – Turks and Caicos – No one felt them, but they did happen and measured in the range of 1.2 to 4.1 on the Richter scale, says the Seismic Research Center of the University of the West Indies.  The things no one felt were a jaw dropping number of earthquakes – said to be as many as 54 – which struck north of St Kitts and Nevis over the weekend.

Dr. Joan Lutchman, a seismologist, heads the research centre and while on radio this past Monday, said the Caribbean is long past due for what was called, ‘the big one’ and explained that the 54 quakes happened within a 21-hour time frame impacting the Caribbean countries of St Lucia, Martinique and Dominica also.

Turks and Caicos Director of Disaster Management and Emergencies, Dr. Virginia Clerveaux said her office is aware and monitoring.

“They have been advising us for some time now.  Now, UWI is reminding us with greater frequency.”

News 784 of St Vincent & Grenadines, in an article published on December  11, 2018 quoted Dr. Lutchman as saying: a “big one is coming and it is better to be prepared.”

It was advised for the Caribbean to take the signs “very seriously”.

It is noted that seismic activity in the Caribbean was uncommonly high for 2018.

Trinidad and Tobago and Haiti were most severely impacted by earthquakes in August and October, respectively.  In the Haiti earthquake on October 6, 18 people were killed and 548 people were injured.
