Electric Vehicles endorsed by CARICOM for the Caribbean

#Surinam, August 6, 2018 – CARICOM is endorsing the idea of electric vehicles and an energy summit held in July in Surinam was looking into how to attract sustainable financing for the region’s energy sector.  Held over two days, the workshop was a collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation and CARICOM Development Fund or CDF and it welcomed a wide range of stakeholders.

Meanwhile, Devon Gardner, CARICOM’s energy programme manager said high purchase prices is what stymies the popularity of electric vehicles in the region.

“Nonetheless, power utilities in the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and St. Lucia are starting to install charging networks, which could help the sector expand; this according to Megapower’s Joanna Edghill.  Megapower is a five year old EV company, having sold 300 electric vehicles and now expanding into the Caribbean.”
