#GrandTurk, August 7, 2018 – Turks and Caicos – The Ports Authority and Island Drilling Ltd have signed a contract for the rehabilitation of the Grand Turk Roll Off – Roll On (Ro/Ro) Ramp, which was closed to the public in 2015 due to structural deficiencies which rendered it unsafe.

As part of the contract, Island Drilling LTD will repair the existing ramp, replace the existing steel bridge with a pre-cast concrete structure and repair the ramp abutment.  The work will result in a more resilient Ro/Ro ramp structure.  The project is expected to be completed within 3 months.

The goal of Ro/Ro ramp rehabilitation project is to maximize the contribution of South Dock port to economic development and lowering the cost of living and doing business on Grand Turk and Salt Cay.

The port facilities at South Dock Grand Turk comprise a main pier and a roll off – roll on ramp and is the sole facility for the off-loading and loading of international trading vessels and vessels conducting inter-island freight and trading services to Grand Turk.

The Ro/Ro ramp is the base for inter-island trade between Grand Turk and Salt Cay.  Over the years the Ro/Ro ramp has been used primarily for inter-island barge services and vessels engaged in the trade of building materials such as sand, gravel, block, etc.  The ramp is also used to transport goods that cannot be lifted by a crane stationed on Grand Turk.
