Integrity Commission Press Release on Police Officer Charged & Convicted of Corruption

#Providenciales, August 6, 2018 – Turks and Caicos – ‘On 2^nd August 2018, Police Constable Georgio Chambers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) was sentenced at the Supreme Court, Providenciales, by Mr. Justice Shiraz Aziz, to the following:

• 9 months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months
• to conduct 200 hours of community service
• to undergo a counselling program
• disqualified from holding public office for a period of 5 years

He was convicted on 27^th June 2018 after a trial by jury, of one count of corruption under Section 67 of the Integrity Commission Ordinance.

The original allegation related to an incident between December 2016 and January 2017 in which he accepted $200 from a third party, for the apprehension and detention of a member of the public who he had placed in the Immigration Detention Centre.  The officer’s criminal act had originated as a result of debt owed by the victim of the unlawful detention, to a third party, associated to Chambers.  Subsequently an investigation was conducted by the Integrity Commission.

Chambers, aged 31 years, had been a Police Officer with RTCIPF for 7 years.

The above sentence should serve as a reminder to any public servant of the Turks and Caicos Islands that allegations of corruption will be robustly investigated by the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Integrity Commission.  Any offenders caught committing such offences will be liable to criminal conviction and/or dismissal from the TCI public service where appropriate.’
