TCI: Cadets & Mass Casualty Training

#Providenciales, July 25, 2018 – Turks and Caicos – The over 100 youngsters who make up the Turks and Caicos Islands Cadets completed a Summer Camp, which was geared to building life and volunteer skills.  With some drills, awards presentations and words of wisdom, the Cadets summer camp closed out, also welcomed special guests, both the Governor and Premier.

 In other news.. In the event of a major disaster, the Turks and Caicos Islands is hoping to be more ready than ever… the Pan American Health Organization is in country and cited the value of inter-agency cooperation during the opening of a Mass Casualty Workshop hosted by the Department of Environmental Health.

“It’s about engaging the emergency agencies from around the country, in a multi-set coordinated system, how to set up a field hospital and establish field treatment, in terms of trying to deal with the disaster on site and not taking it to the hospital.” – Peter Burgess – PAHO Emergency Response Facilitator.

The workshop will run the entire week and aims to enhance the capacity of mainly first responders including police, emergency medical services and disaster management.

“We know that we have limited resources, we have one hospital, we have limited health professionals, so we have to learn to train as a group, because a mass casualty incident will require a multi-sectorial approach.” – Sharlene Higgs – Dir. of Health Disaster Education & Training, TCI

The workshop culminates in a simulation on Saturday, it was officially opened by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health.
