BAHAMAS: Migrants apprehended in Inagua

#Inagua, July 9, 2018 – Bahamas – A US Coast Guard OPBAT helicopter spotted 6 Haitian migrants on the North shore of Inagua yesterday morning.  Those migrants were airlifted to Matthew Town.  Several additional migrants were found in the nearby bushes by the local community and law enforcement agencies, and Royal Bahamas Defence Force personnel following a combined search of the island.

The migrants have all been turned over to Immigration officials for further questioning.  An ongoing search for additional migrants is currently taking place.  It is estimated that 120 may have landed.

On Tuesday past, 46 Haitian migrants were apprehended off south Eleuthera by HMBS Madeira, The conventional sailing vessel was apprehended approximately 20 miles offshore.  Those migrants have since been charged before the courts for illegal landing.  Over 200 migrants have been apprehended by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force for the year, thus far.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force remains committed to protecting the territorial integrity of The Bahamas and keeping our borders secured.
