#Providenciales, June 18, 2018 – Turks and Caicos – Three new Ford F150 trucks have been handed over officially to the Turks and Caicos people by the United Kingdom in an effort to support vector or mosquito control.

A brief but poignant ceremony attracted the country’s top leaders for a gift that will bolster efforts of the Environmental Health Department in North Caicos, Providenciales and Grand Turk; each island will receive one of the vehicles.

“This program is a part of a wider program supported by the United Kingdom Government and Public Health England, on providing support to the Overseas Territories following the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria.  It’s a part of a program that’s not only being offered to the Turks and Caicos, but also to BVI and Anguilla.  This is the first form of the donation that will come in the form of over  £600,000 (six hundred thousand pounds)-  HE Anya Williams, Acting Governor TCI

“Public Health England has delivered, and we are here witnessing three new trucks right here.  Please let us give Public Health England a round of applause for this donation.  We want to cover all the islands, all the islands will have vector control trucks.  We know that as soon as mosquitoes come out we have to pressure for the Environmental Health officers to go out into the communities and start spraying.  We ask them why you’re not spraying and why they’re not poisoning the swamps, but now we have the equipment, we have the vehicles that we can get into the communities right away.” – Edwin Astwood, Minister of Health TCI

“Public Health England has really been supporting us post the storms, they were here, they assisted us even immediately after.  We are grateful for the donation they have given us now.” – Sharlene Robinson, Premier TCI

From remarks on the generosity and practicality of the gifts from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or FCO to opportunities to inspect and literally feel out the brilliant white trucks, there was gratitude for the trucks which give the country better coverage when it comes to fighting mosquitoes.

The donation was inspired by work on the ground by the United Kingdom in the aftermath of the 2017 Hurricanes which devastated 80% of buildings country-wide.
