BAHAMAS: International Day of the Seafarer

#Nassau, June 26, 2018 – Bahamas – The Ministry of Transport and Local Government, The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Port Department observed the annual International Day of the Seafarer on Monday, June 25, along with other countries throughout the world.

The day is observed in recognition of the invaluable contribution to the world economy and society at large by seafarers.  Minister of Transport and Local Government the Hon. Frankie Campbell said “with 90 percent of goods being transported by sea, the importance of shipping and the seafarers who ensure the safety and security of the ships and their cargo in our daily lives cannot be over-estimated.”

Minister Campbell also announced that Captain Dwain Hutchinson of the Bahamas Maritime Authority will take a post as a governor of the International Maritime Authority (IMO) World Maritime University (WMU). He will be the first Bahamian to hold the position.

Captain Cyril Roker retires as port controller and admiralty marshal, June 30. Commander Raymond King will assume the position of acting port controller.
