TCI: Beaches Employees Celebrates Earth Day 2018

#TurksandCaicos, April 28, 2018 – Providenciales – In celebration of World Earth Day, Employees of Beaches Turks & Caicos Resorts Villages and Spa lead another monthly cleanup campaign in the Lower Bight Community where volunteers collected over 85 Bags of garbage along the Lower Bight community.

Enthusiastic volunteers began the early morning cleanup picking up debris along our general route which included- The entrance at the Ianthe Pratt Elementary, Beaches Round-About, towards our resort main gate, along the main Lower Bight road and Princess Drive.  The Team also collected trash from the shoulders, roadsides, and homes located directly on the Lower Bight Road.

“This is always an exciting event for  the Beaches volunteers to go into the  streets of the Bight community to host their ‘Get Involved’ clean-up campaign,” said Shuntal Gibson, Environmental,  Health & Safety Coordinator for the resort, “The Bight Community is also the resort’s community we take great pride in this beautification project.”

In its sixth year-The Get Involved –beautification project committee found it fitting to host the much-needed cleanup during April which celebrates Earth Day on the 22^nd and focused on the importance of environmental preservation in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

“This is our first cleanup for the year and our first since the hurricanes; our group of volunteers worked tirelessly and removed several bags of trash and debris thrown along the entire route.”  Gibson continued, “Immediately after the cleanup the bags of trash were properly secured and collected from the roadsides, tallied and we are excited to announce that we have collected over 1,275 Lbs. of garbage which is about 85 bags.”

“Our goal is to educate the community” she continued, “While we enjoy our part in being a good corporate citizen and hosting these cleanups, but educating the community on the importance of the clean environment and disposing of their trash responsibly will benefit us all.  Education is the key to preserving our beautiful by nature environment.”

Other Earth Day activities celebrating the 48^th anniversary of the international environmental movement will include a detailed tour of the resort’s notorious recycled plant where students will learn about the resort’s recycling program, treatment plant, and pool heat recovery system and also about the importance of creating energy using the solar panels.  The resort will also be hosting a tree planting reforestation initiative with the TCI National Trust at the Cheshire Hall Plantation.  Students across the islands will also receive reusable water bottles courtesy of the resorts philanthropic arm the Sandals Foundation to help to reduce the use of disposable plastic bottles among school children.

Earth Day was founded on the premise that all people, regardless of race, gender, income or geography, have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment.  The Earth Day Network has a global reach with a network of more than 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries.

Beaches Resort Villages and Spa has long been committed to preserving the natural beauty of its surroundings and, along with all of the Sandals and Beaches resorts, has been awarded the much coveted, Earth Check Award for Environmental Stewardship. The resort’s Earth Day celebration is the latest in a long line of eco-initiatives that include the annual underwater clean up, the Reef Ball project and other Recycling Project here in Providenciales.
