1 World Foundation Clinical Team Visit Turks & Caicos Islands

#TurksandCaicos, April 14, 2018 – Providenciales – The Ministry of Health, Agriculture, Sports and Human Services, Special Needs Unit welcomes the clinical team from 1 World Foundation, an international non-profit charitable corporation comprised of volunteers from New York State, USA and Ontario, Canada.  The Mission of 1 World Foundation is to assist government, private agencies, and persons with special needs through the provision of clinical, special education, administrative and training services.

This year a Clinical Evaluation Team comprising of a Neuropsychologist specializing assessing children with developmental delays, Occupational Therapist, a Speech and Language Pathologist and a School Psychologist Consultant will travel to three islands to evaluate children referred by their pediatricians, educators and parents because of developmental concerns (e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Developmental Coordination Disorder, Speech/Language Disorder, Learning Disorder, Specified or Unspecified Neurodevelopmental Disorders) 9th -20th April, 2018. Discussing interventions with families and identifying immediate and long term treatment needs are part of the consultation process.

Since November 2014 one hundred and thirty-nine (139) children has been assessed in country as a result the quest for in country therapeutic services.  Shortly, Rehabilitative Services such as an Occupational Therapist along with a Speech and Language Pathologist will be a reality in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

The impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria resulted in the second visit for last year being cancelled thus resulting in a back log.  Parents are encouraged to register with the Pediatricians, Special Needs Unit or the Special Needs Education Officer.

The Ministry of Health, Agriculture, Sports and Human Services, Ministry of Education, Youth, Culture and Library Services in collaboration with 1 World Foundation and are committed to developing sustainable programs for people with Special Needs in Turks and Caicos Islands.
