#Bahamas, March 17, 2018 – Nassau – Brute guts and determination helped the men of Alpha Team power their way to win the basketball championship trophy at the recent Royal Bahamas Defence Force’s Basketball Lunch Bowl competition on Friday past.

In observance of the Force’s 38th anniversary and Health and Fitness month, this tournament is one of the many sporting activities the Officers and Marines will be showcasing.  The men and women of the Defence Force form the Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta teams.

The Basketball Lunch Bowl championship game, which was played at the Coral Harbour Base, pitted the Alpha team against Charlie team. After racing to a 22-13 halftime lead, the Alpha team held on to win the game with a final score of 38-33.  Leading the way for Alpha was Leading Seaman Otis Ferguson with 10 points with Marine Seamen Ivan Rolle and Marine Seaman Kirk Bain chipping in with 9 points apiece.  Marine Mechanic Elway Pickstock led Charlie team with 9 points in a losing effort, and Marine Seaman Lorenzo Rolle added another 8 points.

Coordinator of the event, Chief Petty Officer James Darling lauded both the players and the fans whose energy and support during the week of the tournament was infectious. According to Darling, events as such inculcates deep fraternal bonds and camaraderie among coworkers that is required, especially in our line of work. With a volleyball tournament up next on the sporting calendar, he anticipates an even bigger and better event.

Referees for the game were Lieutenant Delvonne Duncombe and Petty Officer Raynard Dawkins.  Team captains for Alpha and Charlie teams were Petty Officer Carlton Mackey and Leading Seaman Tomico Butler respectively.

Even as the Force strides quickly into its 38th year of official existence, Commodore Bethel thanked supporters and planners for continuing to reach towards heights beyond, remembering their successes and adapting to overcome challenges.
