TCI Chevening Scholar Ready to Make an Impact

#TurksandCaicos, February 23, 2018 – Providenciales – Lormeka Williams, the TCI’s 2016/2017 Chevening Scholar, has returned home after a successful year of study in the UK, where she achieved a Master’s Degree in Conservation Biology (Merit) from the University of Kent.

In recognition of her achievement, H.E the Governor, Dr. John Freeman, met with Mrs. Williams to present her with the Chevening completion certificate; officially making Mrs. Williams an alumnus of one of the most prestigious professional and educational networks in the world.

H.E. the Governor, Dr John Freeman commented: “I congratulate Lormeka on her achievement in being awarded a Chevening Scholarship and for having gone on to gain her Master’s Degree at the University of Kent in the UK. The Chevening awards are highly prestigious and the subject of great competition internationally”.

“It is wonderful that a person from TCI was able to win through and I hope it will encourage others to apply for Chevening awards in future. For bright, motivated persons in TCI, Chevening offers the chance to widen horizons, to build expertise and come back and contribute further to the development of the country,” said Governor Freeman.

Williams expressed that: “The experience of being a Chevening Scholar was very exciting and to be an alumnus of this prestigious programme is humbling.  I would like to thank everyone that supported me throughout this time, especially my husband and family; and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for this opportunity”.

“My time in the UK gave me many opportunities to broaden my horizons and deepen my knowledge and skills: from studying in the southeast, to field work at the Durrell Conservation Academy in Jersey, Channel Islands; Environmental Legislation debate at King’s College and glamping at the Port Lympne Reserve.  The past year of study has brought lifelong friends, colleagues and a network of professionals and experts in their fields; I highly recommend that persons apply during the next application cycle that begins in August 2018. I am excited to be back home and motivated to see how I can contribute to the Turks and Caicos Islands and make a valuable impact.”

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, an applicant must:

– Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country, and intend to return there after your studies;

– Hold a degree that is equivalent to at least an upper second-class honours degree in the UK;

– Have completed at least two years’ work or equivalent experience before applying for a Chevening Scholarship;

– Be able to meet the Chevening minimum English language requirement;

– Be able to obtain the correct visa, and receive an unconditional offer from a UK university.
