#TurksandCaicos, January 25, 2018 – Providenciales – On the 2nd of February each year World Wetlands Day is celebrated.  This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar.  The Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR), together with the Turks & Caicos National Trust (TCNT), will be hosting Wetland Clean-ups to commemorate this day, as well as to take the opportunity to teach the community at large, about the importance of conserving wetlands in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

Join the DECR on Saturday, 3 February, from 07:30 – 09:00am at Wheeland Pond, Blue HillsProvidenciales or at North Creek (meeting point: west side of the mouth) in Grand Turk in an attempt to conserve our wetlands for a sustainable urban future!

Wetlands are often an undervalued natural resource and are important to the TCI for the following reasons:

  1. Wetlands ensure fresh water and replenish ground water;
  2. Wetlands purify and filter harmful toxins;
  3. Wetlands are a breeding ground for many commercially important fish species;
  4. Wetlands provide vital habitats for migratory birds;
  5. Wetlands ease flooding and safeguard against drought;
  6. Wetlands reduce the impacts of erosion; and
  7. Wetlands provide sustainable livelihoods.

Please take this opportunity to get involved in your local community and to ensure wetlands for a sustainable urban future!
