#TurksandCaiocos, January 25, 2018 – Providenciales – A serious spike in cases of cancer has health officials in the Turks and Caicos rallying behind an idea that there needs to be more informed discussions and serious, activation of plan to do minimize the disease which is killing more and more islanders each year.  Dr Armando Sardi was introduced by the Minister of Health, Edwin Astwood and Private sector partner, Dr. Hugh Malcolm as having a expansive background that could rescue the TCI from this globally common, unfavorable trend.

Dr. Sardi sat for nearly an hour with members of the Turks and Caicos media core, expounding on the gravity of this often deadly disease, agreeing that indeed the effort to beat cancer must be a collaborative one.

“Education, children, girls, boys knowing how to help prevent cancer, how to diagnose early, early vaccination.  For example, if you vaccinate a kid, both boys and girls with the vaccine for the viral HP virus, you will prevent 90 percent of the cervical cancers, 90 percent. If women do screening mammograms, you are going to detect the cancer early when it’s curable. Cancer does not mean death, and that is the most important thing to do, we are afraid that if I find cancer I’m going to die, if I operate I’m going to die, it’s going to get bigger, that’s not correct.  If cancer is detected early, most cancers will be cured.”

As Director of Cancer Medicine at Mercy Medical in Baltimore, Dr Sardi explained what needs to happen…

“I am very grateful that the country, and I have already met with several people that are really dedicated to make a change.  But we need the help of the industry, the Tourism industry, all the industries in the country, private, government, schools, education, because if we all don’t work together, it will never happen, and as I mentioned before, this is a process that will effect more and more people.”

Cancer is up 18% in the Turks and Caicos.
