#TurksandCaicos, December 18, 2017 – Providenciales – An all clear was issued by the Environmental Health Department on Friday December 15, 2017 for use of the Detention Centre, Providenciales.

On Thursday December 7, 2017, the Ministry of Border Control and Employment received reports from the management of the Detention Centre, Immigration Department, Providenciales that four (4) Dominican Republic Nationals were diagnosed with Scabies.    Diagnosis was made at the Primary Health Care clinic in Providenciales by medical officials.   As previously done, all four (4) male detainees were separated and received medication.   These persons have since left the Islands.

Scabies, a disease caused by the mite Sacoptes Scabiei, is highly contagious and immediate actions were taken by the Ministry to sanitize the area of the Detention Centre and to activate protocols for mitigation against spread of the infectious disease.

The Immigration Department activated its plan of changing of mattresses, bedding, linens and clothing, and due to exposure to the infected detainees, health officials visited the Detention Centre to assess the health of the remaining detainees, attending security guards and the Immigration Officers assigned to the Detention Centre.

Visitation by the public and other officials was suspended until further notice as a measure for containment of the outbreak to the Detention Centre only. Officials from the Ministry of Health assisted in the coordination of sanitization, sterilization and treatment efforts.
