#TurksandCaicos, December 31, 2017 – Providenciales – A new program is coming to encourage healthier lifestyles among our youngest residents thanks to Nutrition in Demand and Move-a-thonTCI 2018.  Kidfit will be launched this year, adding to half a dozen other nutrition outreach programs started by TCI Registered Nutritionist, Tamika Handfield.

“It is Nutrition in Demand’s biggest fundraiser and all funds raised for the running of the various programs in the community.  Some programs include: nutrition education workshops, disease prevention workshops, nutrition education and culinary classes for children and our newest program starting in 2018 will be KidFit….a exercise program just for children.  They will be engaged in physical activity through fun and interactive games.”

Handfield in speaking to Magnetic Media explained this sixth installment of her walk, run and cycle event is designed to jumpstart and undergird New Year’s goals for healthy living.

“Many people make New Year’s resolutions and many of those resolutions are health related.  Therefore, one of the main aims of Move-a-thon was to encourage residents to kick start their New Years resolutions.  This is why it is held so early in January.  We believe it’s the perfect time especially since so many of us over indulge during the holidays.  Over the years, Move-a-thonTCI has grown to become one of TCI’s premier sporting events.”

It is the first health-based community activity on the annual calendar, attracting hundreds of all ages – year after year – to the starting line at The Bight Park at 6am for a 5k or 10k or half marathon and full marathon, which is 26.2 miles.

“The organizing committee has prided itself on making #Move-a-thonTCI a family friendly event.   Everyone from 0-100 is welcomed to either walk, run, cycle or be pushed in a wheelchair.  The aim is just to get moving!  We have had toddlers being pushed by their mothers, older children on tricycles and we’ve even had a few dogs in previous years.  So, everyone is welcomed to join us on Jan 13th, 2018.”

The walk, run, cycle is capped off with a health fair featuring the island’s leading medical facilities and supporters of healthy living.

Registration opened just before Christmas and is ongoing. Secure the 5k at $20; 10k at $25; Half Marathon at $35 and Marathon at $65.  Contact Tamika Handfield: 649-442-3978 to join Move-a-thon2018.
