#TurksandCaicos, December 21, 2017 – Providenciales – A no nonsense approach to immigration matters appears to be the way a new leader of the department will steer the ship.   A new immigration Director was appointed within the final quarter of 2017 for the Turks and Caicos, and his name is Derek Been.   Been is no stranger to the public sector, serving before in Tourism, Home Affairs, Works and Utilities either as an undersecretary or a permanent secretary.

Work officially started for Derek Been, as the Director of Immigration on November 15, and head of the public service, Deputy Governor Anya Williams said:  “His appointment which is a critical one, comes at a very critical time as we seek to make a number of positive changes in the structures, systems and management in the Ministry of Border Control and more specifically in the Immigration Department.”

The Minister was also commenting, Deputy Premier Sean Astwood shared that Mr. Been joins the team when now more than ever, “…there needs to be sound direction and developments in the policies and practiceslll guiding both migration and immigration activities for the protection and security of our borders.”

Been appears to agree with the Minister, stating in the media release about his appointment that, “The staff that I lead are expected to operate within the provision of the laws of the country. I expect the officers to be fair, firm and consistent in exercising their functions and we expect the Public and our clients to appreciate and adhere to the law.”  Been listed a number of things to which he is looking forward in 2018, including he said, “increased staff training and cross training, forging strategic alliances and the use of technology to protect our borders.”
