Hurricane Irma links Turks and Caicos to Maryland, fireman finds ‘treasure’ on the beach

#TurksandCaicos, December 19, 2017 – Salt Cay – Hurricane Irma was indisputably bad for the Turks and Caicos, but the historic, catastrophic storm was not all bad… there are some bright moments and among them is a story coming out of Salt Cay, which puts this charming little island in an amazing spotlight.   Magnetic Media and Turquoise Morning traveled to Salt Cay thanks to Caicos Express Airways with John Galleymore, a local explorer and ex British soldier who shared an intriguing story.

“With an embedded GPS system, they set off three in 2016, two reaching to the UK shores to the shores of England, and one kind of did a weird kind of  a loop and ended up on Salt Cay.  We think maybe the pre-storm in Irma affected the current and the winds and it ended up on the beach here.  It’s absolutely fantastic for something that set sail in 2016, and it finally ended up here and is found by one of the local firefighters at the airport.”

And the sailing apparatus, a school science project launched by 11 thru 13 year olds, a boat like structure about six feet long, was found by a Salt Cay fireman who after taking a long stroll out to the beach, un-beached the peculiar, yellow-coloured, surfboard-shaped object which he immediately thought would make a cool gift for his two year old son.    Now fireman Ranfurly Been is a part of maritime history and the lives of so many more children from The Country School in Easton, Maryland, USA.

“….and I’m glad that I can pass the information or the boat back to you guys and send it back out, i’m glad I found it, that I can put it back in the water so you guys can finish your tour around the world and finish whatever you are studying, and I hope that you be successful in your studies through my help and the people who are around me here and the whole of Salt Cay.”

Now what happens is the sailing craft – named COUGERS – will be refurbished in Salt Cay and with its GPS continuing to share its movements in the Atlantic Ocean, Turks and Caicos students will relaunch the resilient boat which  will continue to send its coordinates to the school students of The Country School in Maryland and we will all wait to see where next the sailing apparatus will land.
