Detention Center law suit looming, relative says brother wrongly locked up since September

#Bahamas, December 4, 2017 – Nassau – The Carmichael Road Detention Center is under fire again for alleged illegal detentions as reportedly over-zealous officers continue to lock people up without proper legal processing; this time it is a Bahamian man who appears to be Haitian.   The man is represented by attorney and activist, Fred Smith who along with family is aiming to demonstrate that 34 year old Jean Rony Jean Charles was detained since September without ever appearing before the court or being charged with any crime.

This is yet another law suit filed against the Detention Center which is gaining an embarrassing reputation in matters like these.    A relative of Jean Charles provided documents for his release, but those documents have had zero effect and in a media report it is even said they were lost by the officials.    It is contrary to Bahamian law and Human Rights law to incarcerate someone without placing them before the court and charging them officially with a crime.

One explanation given by Immigration has been that doing this would severely backlog their operations due to the volume of arrests of suspected illegal migrants.
