#TurksandCaicos, November 10, 2017 – Providenciales – The Survey and Mapping Department (SMD), in collaboration with the Department of Environment & Coastal Resources (DECR) will be celebrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, 2017.
GIS Day, which falls on the 15th of November and was started in 1999, provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. In the TCI it is aimed at practical applications, developing knowledge and skills in the field and exposing the youth to an exciting and rewarding career path.
“The past few months has been extremely challenging for us as a country, as such, this year’s event titled “Discovering our World: Unleashing the Possibilities, Making a Difference” seeks to establish the need for a greater understanding of the spatial environment, as well as to demonstrate the use of this powerful tool called ArcGIS,” said Cyprian Smith, Director of Survey and Mapping. “As we strive to amalgamate spatially referenced data maintained within the public and private sectors, GIS Day 2017 will exhibit how spatial analytical tools can be used to analyze patterns and to derive possible solutions to real world problems at the click of a button.”
“In addition to demonstrating the use of ArcGIS, this year, we are seeking to attract students and other young professionals to GIS as a viable career option and the possibility of a new market within the TCI.”
A workshop, themed ‘Discovering the World: Unleashing the Possibilities, Making a Difference’ is to be held on November 16th at the Fortis TCI Conference facilities, Providenciales from 10am to 3pm, with the Honourable Premier Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson as the event’s keynote speaker. Various public and private organisations, as well as local high schools, have been invited to attend with the opportunity to discover and explore the benefits of GIS on a local, regional and international scale.
