#UnitedStates, November 22, 2017 – New York – The Turks and Caicos joins nations of the world and of the region at a special convening in New York City, called to order by the United Nations. The UN Donors Conference is happening now and is being hailed as a big deal by countries hard hit by natural disasters linked to climate change, and it is a big deal for the Turks and Caicos which is finding that a well established financial lead is being eaten away due to the financial impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September.
Premier Sharlene Robinson last week announced that she would be at the high level session, ensuring the Turks and Caicos can get its piece of the donor pie. CARICOM countries are hoping to raise over $2b at this international donor’s conference, which started on Tuesday.
Colin Granderson, assistant secretary general of CARICOM said, “Dominica and Barbuda were among the Caribbean single trading bloc countries that were ruined by the 2017 storms, and most of the focus will be on these two. Officials say they have no plan to ignore the fact that associate members such as the Turks and Caicos Islands and the British Virgin Islands had also suffered serious damage.”
For the two-day meeting, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, Western donor nations, including the U.S., and some of the wealthier countries in the Middle East are expected to attend. The Premier is now back in country and photos received from the contingent show that strategic connections were made. Hon Sharlene Robinson confirmed that a report on the success of trip is forthcoming.
