#Bahamas, November 29, 2017 – Nassau – The Minister of National Insurance said he found the stance taken by some staff of the NIB unacceptable, because the matter had been resolved earlier in the day.  Brensil Rolle was speaking to media outside of Cabinet when he addressed the protest staged on Monday at the NIB by staff who say it is unacceptable that they were being paid late by big money making National Insurance Board.

In a report on ZNS, the President of the Union of Public Officers Marvin Duncombe accused the NIB of wanting staff to do their jobs for them; saying some workers were told via letter that they would be cut for December and the letter asked for unexplained unexcused absences.   Duncombe said the explanations were provided since 2016, that they union members were not going to present the information again.   But Minister Rolle said he was in touch regularly with NIB management and the union, and was disappointed that the group still decided to stage the 45-minute demonstration.

“Individuals received a notice on Friday that their salary payments would be late.  That matter was resolved to the best of my understanding Monday morning and it is unfortunate that individuals had to be called out knowing full well the matter would be addressed and that is what is unfortunate to me.”

It was said the delay in staff salaries was due to a glitch at FirstCaribbean International Bank.
