#TurksandCaicos, November 15, 2017 – ProvidencialesThe court of Appeal will hear cases today and among them, the matter of Dwight Simmons who in November 2016 was stopped by residents from an armed robbery of City Market, more commonly called the African store which is located in Blue Hills.   Police came and got the man, who was subdued by residents – the citizens’ arrest grabbed headlines at a time when armed robberies were far too rampant in Providenciales.

Lara Maroof will represent 35 year old Simmons, who is appealing for a reduced sentence.  Simmons got 13 years for the armed attempted robbery.

Also at the court of appeal, Paul Missick, who was in July this year convicted of the crime of entering a tourists hotel room and robbing the couple of cash.    It happened at the Ocean Club and here was another instance where a suspect was caught and held until Police arrived.    Two brothers committed this crime and were sentenced to five years.   Jamal Misick Thompson is the brother but it is Paul who wants the five years reduced; he is represented by Guy Chapman.

Guy Chapman also has the appeal’s case of Thomas Watkins Jr, who was arrested and charged on a firearms offense after he fired at a group of Five Cays men early last year.    The ex-fireman was sentenced to five years for the crime where one man was grazed in the head by a bullet from Watkins’ gun; he wants his sentenced reduced.

And a gang attack in Five Cays, where Darrinson Missick got four years for beating up and chopping, with a cutlass, a Jamaican man and his mother.    The group, from Kew Town Providenciales were all sentenced for the crime, but Missick got the longest time – four years – for the violent attack.    Chervent Almanor and Davens Smith were also found guilty; Almanor got two years and Smith got a suspended sentence.    Darrinson Missick is hoping his attorney, Lara Maroof can get his prison time cut down at the Court of Appeal.
