#TurksandCaicos, October 11, 2017 – Providenciales – The number of Latin American and Caribbean people not eating properly has surged in the past year and the Pan American Health Organisation is concerned.   Ironically, while there are some going hungry, the obesity level is surging too.  A recently released report exposes that hunger levels in this region remain comparatively low, but the growth by 6% or 2.4 million people who are under nourished due to insufficient food intake is alarming.

A #PAHO regional representative said, “We are heading along a bad path. The region has taken a significant step backwards in a fight that it was winning. We cannot tolerate the current levels of hunger and obesity, as they will paralyse the entire Latin American and Caribbean generation”, warned FAO Regional Representative, Julio Berdegué.

The publication shows that in South America, 7.4% or 2.5 million of the children under 5 years of age suffer from overweight and #obesity, equivalent to 6% of the children in Central America and 6.9% of the children in the Caribbean.   Additionally, a third of the adolescents, and two thirds of the adults suffer from overweight and obesity, women being the most affected.

The information is found in the publication, Panorama of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean 2017.
