#Bahamas, October 9, 2017 – Nassau – No one is to be left behind or left out of a progressive, prosperous Bahamas and that includes the disabled among us. The lack of opportunities in education, employment, accessible public transportation, better access to proper healthcare and buildings and other services generally are not escaping the attentions of those who can bring about the changes needed to make life equally as convenient for those with disabilities as it is for residents without them.
Minister for Social Services and Urban Development, Lanisha Rolle in addressing those gathered at the Harry C Moore Library Auditorium at the University of The Bahamas in Nassau said it is the duty of Government to ensure equality. An inaugural conference, sponsored by UB in conjunction with the Ministry was aimed at drumming up support for and touting the country’s seriousness about ensuring there are equal rights for the disabled in The Bahamas.
“The Disability Act is to achieve the equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities and to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disabilities. The landmark Persons with Disabilities Act ensures dignity and protects the rights of persons with disabilities to fully participate in every aspect of society on an equal basis with others.”
The Minister called the conference a gesture at a renewed sense of cooperation and collaboration between government and important stakeholders.
