#Bahamas, October 23, 2017 – Nassau – Tonight the Progressive Liberal Party National Convention opens and during the three days delegates have a grand assignment, selecting a new leadership of the party which was pulverized at the election polls. There is the potential for at least one history making moment to happen, including the fact that the #PLP could become the first political party to have a woman as its leader with a run for party leader by Glennys Hanna-Martin. The race also includes interim leader and former deputy party leader, Philip Brave Davis and Grand Bahama activist, Troy Garvey.
The PLP National Chairmanship race is a contentious one with word that former Immigration and Foreign Affairs Minister, Fred Mitchell may enter the fray which already includes Obie Wilchcombe, the ex-Tourism Minister; Glendon Rolle, who ran for Long Island in the May polls; Alex Storr who served as Chairman of the Mortgage Corporation and Damian Gomez, the former Legal Affairs Minister in the Perry Christie Administration. A virtual unknown publicly, but a PLP Committee member Keith Albury is talking change as he makes his interest known for the coveted chairmanship post.
Chester Cooper, the Exuma MP is in the Deputy Party Leader race alone so far. No one is expected to get a public endorsement from the former party leader, Perry Christie who has told media he will not reveal any favorites.
The 53rd National General Convention is being held at the Melia Resort under the theme – A New Perspective.
