#TurksandCaicos, September 20, 2017 – South Caicos – We are very thankful to report that all residents of the South Caicos community and staff at Sailrock Resort and Sailrock Living are all safe and in good spirits following the impact of Hurricane Irma in the Turks & Caicos Islands. Sailrock Resort and Sailrock Living’s Private Villas sustained some damage from the hurricane, most of which is roofing, cosmetic and grounds-related. We are working through plans to reopen Sailrock Resort before the end of this year!
All of the Villas and residences are structurally sound which we attribute to the thoughtful construction and design of these buildings to weather this type of rare event. We have been in close communication with all Sailrock Villa owners to identify and plan necessary repair work. Construction of new homes in the Peninsula as well as the Sailrock Resort new construction projects faired well and all development activity will continue forward as planned.
While Sailrock prepares to get back to normal operations soon, the damage to Cockburn Harbour town is impactful and we have been very involved in the recovery and response efforts immediately following the storm. Fortis is on-island and has restored power in key parts of the community with the assistance of Sailrock operators and machinery. Sailrock has continued efforts with East Bay Resort to supply water distribution throughout the local community and we have provided the necessary equipment and operators to repair the damaged port to allow for continued shipping. The airport has reopened for regular scheduled flights and the community is bound together with a spirit of resiliency to restore South Caicos.
The South Caicos Heritage Foundation (SCHF) has been established to support the recovery, renewal and restoration of the rich culture, history and heritage of South Caicos. I am committed to supporting this effort and as such, I have personally pledged a dollar for dollar match up to the first $1 million dollars. Initial funding will be driven to the immediate recovery efforts from Hurricane Irma such as water distribution, food, shelter, clean up, on-going education and basic supplies for the 1,200 residents of South Caicos. The long-term donations to SCHF will support the preservation of history, culture and community of South Caicos through revitalization of Cockburn Harbour’s historic buildings, the Queen’s Parade Ground and public areas of the island.
