TCI to open shelters ahead of Maria

#TurksandCaicos, September 20, 2017 – Providenciales – Shelters will be reopened says the Government as the country braces for an overnight tango with dangerous category five hurricane Maria on Thursday.    A media debriefing will happen on Wednesday morning for further information on what the public needs to know about the system and the contingency plan, given the fact that the TCI’s defenses are certainly weakened since the encounter with Hurricane Irma and its 180mph winds.

We expect to hear details on the shelter plans, what can happen with debris still strewn about since the last hurricane, what will happen with the prison which suffered damage and where prisoners escaped, about fuel, water, building and other supplies, an update on electricity restoration and what kind of weather conditions the TCI will experience as Maria moves through.

It is also now announced the Providenciales International Airport is closed as of 8pm Wednesday, which is about 24 hours before hurricane Maria is set to arrive to these islands as a Category 4 hurricane.
