#Bahamas, September 28, 2017 – Nassau – Local Government for New Providence? Well it might be on the way as on Monday, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced that already preliminary studies are underway to determine the viability of the concept which takes care of very local affairs in all of the other islands within the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
The InterAmerican Development Bank is among those delving into the possible benefits of a more local tier of governance for the capital, which is home to over 85% of the entire Bahamas population. Public engagement on the concept, explained the nation’s chief, will come as early as next month.
Dr Minnis said, “We will review the effectiveness of local boards including those of road traffic, hotel licensing, the town planning board and others. Consideration will also be given to the creation of local tourism development boards which will make recommendations on the tourism product on each island as well as on marketing and other areas.”
The Prime Minister made this announcement as he delivered the keynote address at the Opening Ceremony of Local Government’s Leadership Training Conference held at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort. Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis told the elected officers that the Central Government has high expectations of them, adding that their leadership skills, creativity and resourcefulness are catalysts to transformation for the family islands.
