Canadian Government issues TCI travel alert in aftermath of Hurricanes

#TurksandCaicos, September 25, 2017 – Providenciales  – The UK is not the only major source market warning against travel to the TCI; Magnetic Media found that Global Affairs Canada is also advising its citizens not to travel to our islands unless necessary.

“Global Affairs Canada advises against non-essential travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands, due to the damage caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.”

The concern for the Canadian Government is the damage caused after back to back hurricanes and the risk of Zika infection.   Our news organization is told that there are significant cancellations by guests; many are worried about Zika.

The TCI had been able to contain the mosquito borne virus, since it was detected here in early 2016.   The feat of keeping new infections to nil is forgotten now though; mosquitoes are breeding fast and furious since Hurricane Irma hit on September 7.

Also over the weekend the UK warned against all but essential travel to the TCI; that was soon amended to apply to only Grand Turk.   Canadians account for the second largest market and the fastest growing market of visitors to the country.

We have reached out to the PDM Administration for comment on this string of concerning travel advisories; there has been no official comment.
