Bahamas Power Company evacuates its employees

Bahamas, September 6th, 2017 – Nassau – Brave residents who opted to remain on the islands of Mayaguana, Inagua, Crooked Islands, Acklins, Long Cay and Ragged Islands despite the Prime Minister’s invitation for emergency evacuation, will be left without electricity tonight and tomorrow.

This comes as the Bahamas Power and Light Company’s chairman, Darnell Osbourne announced that all BPL employees in Southern Bahamas will be evacuated to New Providence today. The move was made as Bahamians brace for Hurricane Irma’s possible catastrophic arrival.

Last night, Prime Minister Minnis stated, “let me be very clear, those who refuse to evacuate, place themselves in potentially great danger from this monster hurricane, including from dangerously strong and high storm surge, which is one of the greatest threats from a hurricane.”

Already, there have been two flights via Bahamasair out of Inagua today. However, many residents remain in their homes and will soon lose power.
