#TurksandCaicos, August 17, 2017 – Providenciales – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) has revised its original forecast and it is now predicting that the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook will be worse than previously forecasted. In their August update, released on Wednesday August 9, 2017, forecasters indicated that there is a 60 percent chance of an above-average Hurricane Season, with 14 to 19 named storms expected throughout the season. This is an increase from 11 to 17 named storms.
In light of the updated 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast, Dr. Virginia Clerveaux, Director of the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME), stated that, “despite the predictions from the experts, we know that it only takes ONE storm to affect the development gains that the Turks and Caicos Islands have achieved over the years. Therefore, it is important that Government departments, businesses and residents in the Turks and Caicos Islands ensure that they are prepared this Hurricane Season and continue to monitor information from DDME’s Website and Social Media Pages”.
To date the following number of storms in the outlook have already occurred: Tropical Storms Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don and Emily, Gert and Hurricane Franklin.
