#TurksandCaicos, August 25, 2017 – Providenciales – Ain’t nothing wrong with Brand Turks and Caicos announced the Ministry of Tourism and the #TCITouristBoard in a statement yesterday to refute that crime has, certainly hurt tourism arrivals to the country. Recent statistics pointed to a dip, ever so slightly of a 2% drop in long stay visitors and an increase of 17% in cruise arrivals in Grand Turk.
However, Tourism officials in a media statement defend that there is no information to support that crime was the reason the TCI had between April and June recorded 2,655 less guests through the airports.
“The Ministry urges the local media and our tourism stakeholders to verify any information before statements are made public as they can adversely affect the industry and our economy.”
The statement pointed out that a drop in arrivals is expected for the region according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization and that US President Donald Trump, despite some negative press, may have made a strong impression with is ‘Make American Great Again’ mantra which some travel companies believe accounts for some of the ‘staycations’ among Americans. Travel within the US is up, with 60% of Americans opting to stay within the country for vacations, another travel survey, Skift, reveals that 42% of Americans will not take holidays at all this year and another points to a surge in interest in European holidays for Americans.
The TCI Ministry of Tourism and Tourist Board said “everything is being done to ensure our sense of security in our destination. We continue to urge every citizen that we all have a responsibility for sustaining our tourism product, whether it is in keeping your surroundings clean, reporting any criminal activity you may see or know of, and responsible-use of your social media platforms.”
Turks and Caicos arrivals figures, for the first quarter of the fiscal year, were down mainly among Americans and Canadians, our two largest visitor markets.
