Turks and Caicos, August 1, 2017 – Providenciales – The firm position on workers who are illegally resident and even employed in the Turks and Caicos taken last week by Border Control and Employment Minister, Deputy Premier Sean Astwood seems to have been used as a scare tactic by some. A media release on Saturday from the DP said this is not the intention of his ministerial statement given during House of Assembly which asks workers with expired work permits to regularize their status or face being deported, even stop listed.
The statement gives people with this problem until August 14 to comply with TCI law. The Deputy Premier clarified that work permit holders still under consideration for renewal or extension, according to law, will see their work permit continue to be in force until their application is dealt with.
The Ministry further states, “the 14 day measure does not apply to the following persons: Those with active applications for renewals or extensions that are already before the Labour Commissioner for Labour clearances or work permit boards for work permits.”
Excluded from the potential deportation are those who have already applied for permanent residency, naturalization or registration and the like. However, if you are with an expired document, then you had better rush to get an application in before August 14. If you came into the TCI on a Visa, and it is now expired… prepare to leave.
