Turks and Caicos, July 26, 2017 – Just 20 more days and you can legally enjoy lobster bisque, cracked lobster, broiled lobster, lobster in a salad and lobster next to your steak because crawfish season will open on August 15, 2017 to March 31, 2018. The later opening season continues a now five year trend which is believed to have saved the industry.
The number of egg bearing lobsters landed is reduced, this means more eggs are laid and there are now more lobsters to catch. Acting Director of the Department of Environment & Coastal Resources, Ethan Griesbach said, “The past few seasons have seen an increase in the catch per unit of effort, a reassuring statistic suggesting a healthy and rebuilding crawfish stock. This will provide social, economic and environmental benefits to the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
Export of fisheries is the number three industry for the TCI.
