Turks and Caicos, July 25, 2017 – Providenciales – Eastern Provo, Blue Hills and Millennium Heights had special vaccination sites set up on Saturday to deal with up to six animal diseases in an initiative spearheaded by the Animal Health Services unit of the Department of Agriculture.   The country’s Acting Chief Veterinarian, Weinland Crossman explained that it was the outbreak of Parvo virus in April in Grand Turk and the June outbreak of Canine Distemper which led to the need for a national campaign to treat sick animals.

At the announcement of the campaign this past Friday, it was explained by Mr. Crossman that studies have confirmed that sick animals will eventually lead to sick people.

The Chief Vet said, “According to Center for Disease Control, 6 out of every 10 infectious diseases are of animal origin, and 3 or more of every 4 new emerging diseases are also of animal origin.    There is no charge for this service and since Monday, animal owners can take their dogs to Bark and Bliss, Wooding Vet Service or TC Veterinary Association any day during their opening hours and they will administer the vaccines free.”

Saturdays, said the Chief Vet, are outreach days between 8:30am to 12:30pm and this Saturday, the team from Animal Services will be in Kew Town and Five Cays.   Minister of Health, Edwin Astwood was on hand to help in launching the campaign, which runs into August.
