Turks and Caicos, July 26, 2017 – Providenciales – A company has been identified and contracted to repair the shut down Salt Cay airport, and that firm is expected to present a final report this week; this is the update from Premier and Minister responsible for aviation, Hon Sharlene Robinson. The information came late Tuesday and reveals that a preliminary report has been done, and a final report is due for handover to the Civil Aviation Authority.
The CAA stripped Salt Cay airport of its license in late June; the airport is badly run down. The loss of its license halted regular flights into Salt Cay by Caicos Express Airways, but Premier Robinson said, “Notwithstanding this, the Airports Authority has, working with Civil Aviation, put in place mitigating solutions to facilitate the possible lifting of the restriction placed on Caicos Express schedule flights. Further assessments are being carried out (today) in Salt Cay by the Airports Authority’s Executive Aerodrome and Engineering and Maintenance Managers ahead of the final Report and the inspections by the Civil Aviation Authority.”
This is welcomed news, but the Premier cautioned that it is early yet. The Premier said, “It is important to note that these works have not yet been costed and engineers will have to prepare the scope of works to be carried out. Once the cost is determined, steps will be made to secure a contractor to carry out the works.”
Premier Robinson said her administration is aware of the inconvenience and the long term goal is to resume flights asap; until then the Ministry of Infrastructure has been asked to increase ferry services to the Island.
