RIU Paradise Island announces $25M renovation, 350 laid off

Bahamas, July 25, 2017 – Nassau –  RIU Palace Paradise Island will close for renovation for three months and hundreds have been laid off, with the promise of being re-engaged in October.    It was reported by the Minister of Labour that his office is aware of the move by RIU which will see 110 staffers kept on during the renovation, but 350 others released as the property gets a $25m facelift.

The staff is not left high and dry though, explains Minister Dion Foulkes.   Everyone entitled gets their two or three weeks vacation pay, the first week of September staff will be assisted with a back to school bonus payment from RIU and 195 of the workers are entitled to Unemployment Benefit under the National Insurance Board.

RIU is a Spanish all inclusive hotel chain with properties around the region including Aruba, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic and the hotel on Paradise Island suffered some damage in Hurricane Matthew.    RIU had been instructed by the Department of Labour to take immediate steps to inform staff and the public of its closure, which is from July 24 to October 28.
