Grenada, July 4th 2017 – St. George’s – July 4th marks the anniversary of the Treaty of Chaguaramas for CARICOM and also the start of this year’s Heads of Government Conference taking place in Grenada. Delegates from 15 Caribbean countries will be in Grenada from today to Thursday 6th July, to discuss many current issues including regional security, the CSME, Tourism, Air Transportation, opportunities for Financing for Development and Brexit. There is also expected to be an update on the preparations for CARIFESTA XIII to be staged in Barbados from August 17th – 27th under the theme “Asserting our Culture, celebrating ourselves.”
The opening ceremony began this morning at the Grenada Trade Centre, under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Keith Mitchell and will be followed by Heads of Government Business Sessions tomorrow and Thursday at the Radisson Grenada Beach Resort.
Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis is currently in Grenada for the meeting. This will be Minnis’ inaugural CARICOM meeting as Prime Minister of the Bahamas. Also attending for the first time is Haitian President His Excellency Jovenel Moise.
A highlight of the Opening Ceremony today was the presentation of the Triennial Award for Women to the latest recipient. The Ceremony was also addressed by its two newest Members of the Conference, the outgoing Chairman, President of Guyana, David Granger, the incoming Chairman, and the Secretary-General of CARICOM, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque. CARICOM celebrates its 38th anniversary this year.
