Trinidad and Tobago, June 5th 2017: Persistent heavy rains for the past three days in Trinidad and Tobago have prompted the Met Service to issue warnings to Regional Corporations in areas likely to have floods. Although no reports of flooding or disasters have been made, Municipal Corporation Disaster Management teams are on standby to deal with any possible reports of flooding or disasters. Its forecast for the next twelve hours says to expect showers to become heavy and thundery, with Gusty winds and street or flash flooding expected in the event of a heavy shower or thundershower.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service says expect June’s rainfall to be above normal. June 1st marked the official start of the Rainy Season in Trinidad and Tobago, and its first weekend was filled with heavy thundery showers, with the local Met Services urging citizens to brace for more heavy showers, gusty winds and flash flooding.

In its release for the season which runs until December 31st, the Met Service says this year’s rainy season can have an impact on increased flooding. It adds that increased rainfall combined with recent bushfires, meant faster run-off in hilly areas, increasing the risk of flash and riverine flooding, landslips and landslides.

The public has also been advised to keep up-to-date and vigilant with weather updates and advisories via the Met Services Facebook pages or website, or download its mobile app.
