TCI:  Men’s Health Conference to complement Father’s Day

Turks and Caicos, June 8th 2017: Men’s health issues will be the spotlight of an upcoming health conference. Government says it recognizes the social construct of the island communities have often led to men socialized to ignore health care until something dire is in play.

Spearheading the conference is Health, Agriculture and Human Services Minister, Edwin Astwood, who says “when it comes to prevention and early detection, men’s health often takes a back seat to women’s health”. He adds that scientific data shows men, when compared to women, are more likely to smoke and drink alcohol and generally lead less healthy lifestyles. In addition, men are more likely to put off routine checkups and also delay seeing a healthcare provider for symptoms of a health problem.”

The minister says focus will be on the most common conditions affecting men – heart disease, prostate, testicular, and colon cancer, and osteoporosis later in life.

Screening tests will be also be available including testing for Cholesterol, Blood sugar/glucose, Blood Pressure, PSA (prostate specific antigen test and Stress Relief Massages. Men’s Health Conference will take place June 15th on Grand Turk at the HJ Robinson High School Auditorium and on Providenciales at the Tropicana Plaza on June 16th, 2017. Conference begins at 9am and ends at 4pm.
